Rollin' with Elder Ballard

We made gyoza. *selfie apparently required* Hashtag: Japan.

And now for something important! Sometimes you are the most blessed missionary in the entire world and get to have a Mission Conference given by Elder Ballard and other amazing members of the seventy. Elder M. Russell Ballard spoke to us about becoming better missionaries and loving the people we serve. Hearing from him was obviously wonderful, but I was really able to learn from the spirit just by watching his example as an apostle. A disciple of Jesus Christ who really knows him and exemplifies him in his ministry as an Apostle. He holds his wife's hand and makes observations and testifies from the spirit and follows every prompting he gives him. He is bold but also perfectly meek. That's who I want to be. I trustworthy disciple. I think my favorite thing he said in his address was this, which I think we can certainly all apply and be successful if we do. He asked to give our best each day and, "Just let the spirit of the Lord roll with ya."
So let's do that. Write me a letter about your favorite scripture. Love you!
Sister Brewer

A Day in the Life...

A photo of my much-too-radical district! Love these people! And definitely learning a lot from them.
This week was pretty much the same...teaching and finding and testifying and blessing and too much bread! :) My mother and sister sent me questions to answer this week and I loved that! Much easier to write and hopefully things you acutally want to hear about. Feel free to add your own questions in the comments below! I will be happy to answer them! Otherwise just keep going on with your life...because I am not center of it...Jesus Christ is whoo hoo!
What is your daily routine?
We wake up at 6:30 and exercise! We walk up and down our stairs and do sit ups and yes more "in-apartment" exercise ideas would be greatly appreciated. We shower and get ready then do personal study at 8:00. I have really become grateful for personal study! The scriptures are absolutely delicious for my soul. At 9:00 we have Companionship Study where we plan lessons and role play them. At 10:00 we do Language Study which I need so badly ha ha ha hooray! It's actually very enjoyable. Japanese is the coolest language. At 11:00 we have to do Training because I am a wee little beanchan which is mostly studying Preach My Gospel together and practicing teaching lessons. Sister Kartchner and Sister Takaku are great trainers! Then we make lunch and finally go out and dendo! Hooray. If we are blessed with appointments that day we go teach those wonderful people! Otherwise we do finding through housing (knocking on doors), streeting (standing on the sidewalk and doing something interesting enough to stop people), or OYMing (opening your mouth to everyone you see walking down various roads). We also try to visit less active members and share messages with them. On Wednesday nights have Eikaiwa (English class) which I love to teach and on Saturday mornings we have Kodomo Eikaiwa (children's English class) which I love love LOVE to teach! On Fridays we have District Training Meetings and on Sundays we (shocker) have Church! Yay. And at 9:00 we plan for tomorrow and try really hard to do everything there is to do before 10:30 so we can SLEEP (who needs it? not missionaries...). There you go. A day in the life.
What do you eat & where?
We eat rice! We usually eat at the apartment. We made rice and put something over it like curry, or some other creative sauce and vegetables; meat, lettuce, tomato, and avocado for "taco rice," the like. We also eat at an Udon place a lot! Udon are really thick delicious noodles. Sometimes we eat at Hamazushi where the sushi goes around on a conveyor belt, you pick what you want and pay a dollar for each plate at the end! WARNING: everything in Japan is delicious.
Do you eat at member's homes often?
No. But when we do they are so sweet and delicious and fun! I love our members so much. They have become my dear friends.
You ride the subway & your bike most of the time, right?
Yes! We ride our bicycles everywhere but if somewhere is more than an hour bike ride away we take the train. I love the train. It is very tranquil and if I were not a missionary (who is to be anxiously engaged in a good cause) I could totally ride the train all day to think and watch beautiful Nihon go by.
Why are the choices we make important?
The choices we make, especially those in our youth, matter greatly because the effect the health of our spirit. When we make a choice, it adds experience to our mind, body and/or spirit. Your choices affect how well you are able to respond to assignments for the Lord. For example, if you choose to attend seminary regularly and familiarize yourself with the Book of Mormon and maintain purity, if and when you go on a mission you will be able to deepen your knowledge of the principles of the gospel and effectively teach the people you are called to bless. You will be able to focus on improving your weaknesses such as speaking a new language and developing attributes required of a servant of the Lord.
Similarly, if you decide to follow Jesus Christ but disregard some of the minor guidelines given lovingly by the prophets in the "For the Strength of Youth" pamphlet because you feel like you are "safe enough" and "righteous enough" and it's "not that big of a deal," then when you go on a mission you will be able to remember those small papercuts that damaged your spirit. Big choices affect your spirit in a big, immediate, eternal way and small choices effect your spirit in a small, gradual, eternal way. President Thomas S. Monson testified, "Obedience brings blessings." As a missionary I can also testify that that is true.
FoRtUnAtElY, we have an miraculous, never-ending source of Neosporin called the Atonement. The sooner and the deeper you learn to apply the Atonement daily, the more it will bless your life and the more effective you will be as a child of God. I promise. Repentance is a joyful promise, because the Atonement is a joyful miracle. When we repent, Heavenly Father really does forgive us. We may remember our mistakes, but what a blessing to have that little motivation not to do it again. As an imperfect, mistake-making missionary, I am infinitely grateful for the Atonement. I know I don't understand the whole thing yet, but I am working on it. And I am so blessed, so grateful for my life to be able to learn through experiences and choices. God's plan is perfect and full of obtainable joy! His prophets are truly called of Him to give inspired, applicable direction. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is true. Jesus Christ lives as (y)our loving  Savior and Brother.
So much love,
Sister Brewer :)

Typical Eternal Joy

You mean its Monday again already?! What? This transfer is seriously flying by faster that you can say nakerebanadimasen. Which actually takes me a while but I am getting faster! This week we had a great lesson with our investigator with an adorable 17-year-old who converted about three years ago. She also had the same experience, really wanting to be baptized but her mother is very much against the idea. Our investigator has great faith, and Karen's testimony really gave her the strength she needs to continue to read the Book of Mormon and pray every day, because I know when she does Heavenly Father will bless her faith by helping her be baptized! The point is, our members are incredible. Missionaries NEED the testimony of the members. Obviously missionaries are real people but...when an investigator hears from someone living the same kind of life in the same place in the same time, it has more of a personal effect and the Spirit can testify to them even stronger. I am so grateful for the willingness of these members to do missionary work, and I know and can feel how grateful Heavenly Father is too.
On Friday Elder Butters, our district leader, gave us an awesome District Training Meeting on the Book of Mormon! I really admire his testimony of the Book of Mormon and how hard he has worked to really get to know the Book of Mormon, in order to love it thoroughly. Great meeting!
I am very grateful for the power of priesthood, and that we have Elders living worthy of it here in order to bless us and the work. I am really blessed to be surrounded by missionaries that are teaching me by example so much of what I want to become as a missionary. It is incredible and AWESOME. The blessing to grow is miraculous and wonderful.
Continuing with our marvelous members, the Iwase family invited us and our investigator and her kids over for their Family Home Evening on Saturday. What a rockstar member missionary move! They served us amazingly delicious okonomiyaki after we had lots of fun playing with all the kids and balloons. Unfortunately our investigator's three-year-old began screaming as we were beginning lesson, so she decided to leave after 15 minutes of screaming. Poor thing. But she was really intrigued by the concept of FHE and is loving all the emphasis the gospel has on family. We have an appointment with her Tuesday and I think it will be really great! She is progressing slowly but really well!
Anyway, that day my Japanese was feeling especially insufficient. But after she left we asked to share our testimonies with the Iwase's family. My companion gave a beautiful one. As I testified of the importance of the Gospel in the home I felt the spirit so strong. I felt so grateful for Brother Iwase holding the priesthood and taking care of his family, for Sister Iwase building a spirit-filled home where her four children love reading the Book of Mormon. I hope they felt the spirit of the testimony I did. They are truly special people.
Those are some highlights from this week!  I could not be happier and more grateful to be out on this mission. Thank you and I LOVE YOU!!
If you want to be reminded how much Heavenly Father loves and cares for us this week, please read The Family: A Proclamation to the World.
Love from Japan!

Investigating Our Investigators

We got on the train last night and realized that this train car was kind of a representative of our teaching pool! Ha ha... hm.
Sometimes as a missionary you can feel like that sad ex-girlfriend who just won't give up...
We call and text and visit because we love them so much and can see the amazing potential they have! But they are just not that into you...r message at the time. Sigh. Agency. Our investigators are seriously wonderful, interesting, talented and smart people I am grateful and so happy to know. I am excited to see their spirits progress, whether I am in Okazaki to see it happen or not. This week we started out with a lot of great appointments which each eventually cancelled except for one.  And none of the children of God walking along the street were particularly interested in eternal joy at the time,
I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO TAKE THE KEYBOARD OFF CAPS LOCK HELP THIS IS HARD THINGS
Okay we're cool it's fine people everyone just calm down. Please. Anyway, we had one lesson this week, where we teach English to Yamada Shimai and her investigator friends who are super cute. I was so grateful for that opportunity to bear my testimony! This week I learned from the spirit that that confirming witness we call testimony is a gracious gift. Our duty to share is imperative and our opportunity to is precious. I love the gospel and I love the work!  Wherever you are in the journey, please keep enduring to the end. Heavenly Father is proud of you every time you bear your testimony, help His children, read his word. I love you people! Have a marvelous week. :) Smile always be happy!
